Can you have induction without epidural?
Some women consider any vaginal birth a natural childbirth, regardless of whether it includes getting an epidural or Pitocin to induce labor. Others think natural childbirth is only when there is no medical intervention.
Do you need an epidural with Pitocin?
Because Pitocin does not pass the blood–brain barrier, there is no endorphin release. The stronger, harder contractions are difficult for the mother to manage and put additional stress on the uterine muscle. To manage the very strong contractions, epidural analgesia is often given as soon as the Pitocin is started.
Can you be induced with just Pitocin?
As your body preps for labor, your cervix softens and opens. You can’t be induced with Pitocin unless your cervix is ready, because Pitocin won’t change your cervix. Pitocin can induce contractions, but unless your cervix is prepped and ready to go, those contractions aren’t going to actually do anything.
How long does it take to give birth after being induced with Pitocin?
Response time varies – some women start having mild contractions within a few hours of Pitocin being started. A quick response is more likely if you have had a baby before. Many women need 6-12 hours or more of Pitocin to enter active labor (when the cervix dilates at least a centimeter an hour).
