What is Retacrit used to treat?
RETACRIT is a prescription medicine used to treat anemia. People with anemia have a lower-than normal number of RBCs. RETACRIT works like the human protein called erythropoietin to help your body make more RBCs. RETACRIT is used to reduce or avoid the need for RBC transfusions.
Why is retacrit given?
This medication is used to treat anemia (low red blood cell count) in people with long-term serious kidney disease (chronic kidney failure), people receiving zidovudine to treat HIV, and people receiving chemotherapy for some types of cancer (cancer that does not involve the bone marrow or blood cells).
What is epoetin alfa injection used for?
Epoetin is used to treat severe anemia in patients on kidney dialysis or for those not on dialysis. Epoetin may also be used to prevent or treat anemia that is caused by surgery or medicines (eg, zidovudine) that are used for other conditions, such as HIV or cancer.
When is Epogen indicated?
EPOGEN® is indicated for the treatment of anemic patients (hemoglobin > 10 to ≤ 13 g/dL) who are at high risk for perioperative blood loss from elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery to reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions.
Is retacrit given after dialysis?
For adult patients with CKD on dialysis: Initiate RETACRIT treatment when the hemoglobin level is less than 10 g/dL. If the hemoglobin level approaches or exceeds 11 g/dL, reduce or interrupt the dose of RETACRIT.
Can Retacrit be given at home?
Use these Instructions for Use if you or your caregiver has been trained to give RETACRIT injections at home. Do not give yourself the injection unless you have received training from your healthcare provider. If you are not sure about giving the injection or you have questions, ask your healthcare provider for help.
Is retacrit given before or after dialysis?
Is retacrit the same as Epogen?
On May 15, 2018, the Food and Drug Administration approved Retacrit (epoetin alfa-epbx, Hospira Inc., a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc.) as a biosimilar to Epogen/Procrit (epoetin alfa, Amgen Inc.)
When do you stop retacrit?
After 8 weeks of therapy, if there is no response as measured by hemoglobin levels or if RBC transfusions are still required, discontinue RETACRIT.
How long does retacrit last?
Single-dose vials of RETACRIT should be used only one time. Throw the vial away after use even if there is medicine left in the vial. After removing a dose from the multiple-dose vial, store the vial in the refrigerator (but not the freezer). Do not store the vial for more than 21 days.
