Does the bevel on a jack plane face up or down?

The bevel up plane iron (left) goes in to the plane with the bevel facing upwards – hence the name. Another unique feature is the low angle that the iron is held in the plane body.

Which way up should a plane blade be?

The tip of a plane iron or blade is beveled on only one face, and handplanes can be classified based on whether the blade is mounted with the bevel facing up or down. Until recently, bevel-down planes were the rule. Only small block planes were bevel-up.

What is a bevel up plane used for?

Veritas® bevel-up planes are versatile, easy to use woodworking planes. The bevel-up configuration lets you vary the cutting angle as needed by altering the blade bevel angle. A low cutting angle of 37º (12º bed with 25º blade) minimizes fiber tearing in end grain.

Why should the bevel be facing up?

If it’s upside down, it’s actually harder to get it in. “Bevel up” is something that you teach when you teach people how to give injections. The other thing is to be quick. The faster you pierce the skin and get into the muscle, the less trauma you’re creating.

How should the bevel be facing up?

Hold the needle with the hole (the bevel) facing up and the sharp point down. The point of the needle will go through the skin easier this way. Always enter the vein with the needle pointing toward the heart.

Do you insert needle bevel up?

Objective: Intravenous catheters are usually inserted with the bevel facing up. Bevel down may be superior in small and/or dehydrated children.

What angle do you sharpen a smoothing plane?

The primary bevel for chisels and plane blades is normally 25 degrees (a time-tested angle). If you look at the blade diagram above its perfectly acceptable, from a sharpness perspective, to hone the primary bevel flat and hone the back of the blade flat and where these two meet you can achieve a sharp cutting edge.

What happens if the bevel is down?

If you’ve ever had that happen to you, try inserting your IV catheters bevel-down. Doing so will make the angle of insertion much more shallow, thus minimizing the chance of poking the very end of that needle through the opposite wall before the tip of your cannula enters the lumen of the vein.
