Neuschwanstein and the Fussen area is IMHO worth spending some time on a future trip where you can spend a few days and loop in other sights (Garmisch Partenkirchen with the Zugspitze and Partnach Gorge, Wieskirche, Oberammergau, Ettal and Mittenwald to list a few).

The short answer? Much less time than you’d expect. Tours of each castle take roughly 35 minutes, but the entire experience of picking up tickets, walking/taking the bus to the castles, touring both castles, and time between tours adds up to around 4-5 hours total.

The only way to go inside of Neuschwanstein Castle, is by taking a tour. The tour is surprisingly short 30-35 minutes, and it moves very quickly. Even though I wish I had a little more time in each room, I found the interior to be fascinating.

More accommodations are in the nearby village Schwangau and in the lovely town of Füssen, of course. You could easily fill a whole day in Füssen. The oldtown is well worth a stroll, very pretty.
