A meeting was held between Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Makhtoum and they decided to unite. They also invited the other Gulf Emirates to come together for the union. After the British left in 1968, the National Day celebrations started three years later in 1971.
